With 50 percent of children in Rochester living in poverty, one necessity that may get overlooked for the youngest of these children is diapers.

The Junior League of Rochester is one group that has been trying to curb the need, with Rochester’s only diaper bank. With this week being National Diaper Awareness Week, they want the community to pitch in and help.

The Junior League is encouraging donations to its diaper bank at various drop-off locations around the region. Along with diapers, the Junior League will accept pull-ups, training pants, wipes, and diaper creams.

For one baby, diapers alone can cost a family about $80 a month.

“On average, the JLR diaper bank distributes more than 10,000 diapers to partner organizations and social workers each month,” Junior League President Rose Cooper said in a statement. “However, this only meets about 50 percent of our current partner requests and we have 15 additional partners on our waiting list that are in need of supplies.”
